At the core of women’s reproductive healthcare lies the deeply personal decision of having an abortion, one that should be made in consultation with trusted healthcare professionals. Politicians should not encroach upon the autonomy of women or impede the healthcare services doctors provide. It is essential that future generations of girls do not inherit fewer rights than their mothers and grandmothers enjoyed.
However, in Missouri, we face the unfortunate reality of extremist politicians who seek to curtail women’s reproductive rights. The recent overturning of Roe v. Wade by the Supreme Court dealt a significant blow to women’s rights, and Missouri’s response was immediate. Attorney General Eric Schmitt enforced an extreme abortion ban, disregarding the needs and circumstances of women across the state. This ban goes to such extreme lengths that it prohibits abortion from conception onward, without any exceptions for cases of rape or incest, including those involving child victims. It is a cruel law that forces young girls who have experienced unimaginable trauma to endure unwanted pregnancies and give birth against their will.
If Missouri elects Eric Schmitt to the U.S. Senate, we can only expect further erosion of women’s rights on a national level. The consequences would be far-reaching and devastating.
We understand the importance of protecting women’s rights, and that’s why we need representatives who champion these rights. Our focus is on preserving the well-being of women, families, and entire communities. We recognize that threatening healthcare professionals with prosecution is not the solution to address the nationwide shortage of healthcare workers. We firmly believe in the principle of personal autonomy, where individuals have the freedom to make choices concerning their own bodies, guided by their own values and beliefs.
In the Senate, our commitment is to tirelessly work towards restoring and protecting the right to safe and legal abortion everywhere. We will support the codification of Roe v. Wade into federal law, ensuring its lasting impact. Furthermore, we stand ready to support efforts to eliminate filibusters and pass legislation that federally safeguards the right to abortion, providing women across the country with the necessary protection and access to reproductive healthcare.
Across Missouri, women, families, and girls find themselves living in fear for their futures. We stand as advocates and fighters, ready to confront extremist politicians who seek to strip away our rights. Together, we can protect the rights of women, preserve access to safe and legal abortion, and safeguard the well-being of our communities.
